It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved son, Hayden Kyle Scalis, age 25, who left this world far too soon and entered the loving arms of our Lord on Aug. 20, 2026.
Hayden was born on Nov. 9, 2000, to Kyle and Lori Scalis. From the moment he was born, we knew there was something very special about him.
Hayden attended South Anchorage High School and Boise State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
Hayden was the joy and light of our lives—a beautiful young man whose smile could brighten the darkest day and whose laughter filled every room he entered. From the very beginning, he brought incredible energy, a deep sense of love and kindness, and an unshakable sense of wonder that touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He was a devoted son to his mother and father, a loyal companion and a young man who lived with an open heart. Hayden loved adventure and the outdoors. He especially cherished fishing and hunting with his father—fishing on the Kenai River, Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay; spending time with the boys at moose camp; and hunting ducks and geese on the flats.
He also treasured the time he spent biking and cooking with his mother, traveling the world, laughing with family and friends, and pursuing the many passions that brought him joy. He loved music and found happiness in playing both the saxophone and guitar. He approached life with curiosity, enthusiasm and appreciation for every experience. He simply loved life.
Hayden was a dedicated mechanical engineer at the Army Corps of Engineers and took great pride in his work. He brought intelligence, creativity, skill and dedication to his profession and was proud of the work he accomplished.
All of us who loved Hayden will forever remember his warmth, his humor, his compassion, his curiosity, his enormous smile, his comforting hugs and his quiet strength. His presence made the world brighter, and his memory will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Hayden is survived by his loving parents, Kyle and Lori Scalis; beloved girlfriend, Elsbeth Mezey; and aunts, uncles and many cousins, including Kim and Jan Hole, Julie and Louis Fernandez, Heidi Scalis, Patty and John Hardie, Mike Buns and Deb Matney, Craig and Vangie Goetsch, Kurt and Andrea Goetsch and Connie Stolzfus.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold and Louise Goetsch, Audrey Rust and Leo Scalis; uncles, Jeff Goetsch, William Scalis, Steven Goetsch, Jim Goetsch and Rick Stolzfus; aunt, Judy Goetsch.
Hayden's life was far too short, but the love he gave and the memories he created will last a lifetime. He will be deeply missed, forever loved and never forgotten.
Funeral services will be held at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, 2901 Huffman Road, on Sept. 9, 2026, at 1 p.m., with visitation beginning at 12 p.m. The service will also be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/@saintelizabethannsetonparishak/streams. A reception will follow at Fox Hollow Chalet, 11701 Brayton Drive.
