"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." 2 Corinthians 5:8
Stephanie Renee Butler was the most kind, loving and gentle of spirits. She was a true angel that we had the honor of knowing. She was beloved and her legacy and memory lives in the hearts of her family and community. She helped those who were incarcerated, indigent, and those who suffered with mental illness and substance abuse. She believed in assisting the least among us without judgement and she will be remembered for how she loved wholeheartedly, fiercely and unconditionally.
She was born in Alexandria, La., to Onesia Marie Cleveland and Eric Lejune on Jan. 20, 1968. She was raised by her village alongside her six sisters and cousins; grandmother, Medea; aunt, Lucille; uncle, Ronald; and father, Henry Green, who would go on to raise her as his own. Both of her fathers served in the armed forces. Henry Green's service would see her and her family relocate to Alaska, where she would graduate from Bartlett High School.
She was nationally recognized for her participation in JROTC and was a decorated gymnast. She participated in modeling and theatre, starring in The Trojan Woman play. She was an incredible poet and attended Seattle Pacific University, where she studied writing.
Stephanie returned to Alaska from Seattle, Wash., where she would go on to marry her soulmate Rex Lamont Butler and assist him in managing his law practice and rearing their children, Octavia, Synclaire, Vikteria and Nijel. She will be cherished in memory by her husband; children; granddaughters, Vikteria II and Beatrice; her parents; sisters, Zoe, Kim, Deshonica, Rolanda and Kenya; and many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly and the community she served.
She was a philanthropist, patron of the arts and champion of her community. She would often organize fundraisers and frequently hand out meals and money to the homeless. She was most proud of coordinating the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University choir's visit to Alaska when her daughter, Vikteria, was a member.
There are no words to summarize the breadth and depth of her short but meaningful life.
Stephanie's Celebration of Life will be held at ERMBC. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the National Alliance on Mental Illness Anchorage Chapter.
