Patricia Kay Biss, age 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, surrounded by the love of her family. Patty was born in Spokane, Wash., to Carl and Alice Johnson. Her early childhood was shaped by adventure and resilience, as her family moved to several remote areas of Alaska before returning to Spokane during World War II. At the age of 13, she made her permanent home in Anchorage, Alaska, where she later graduated as a proud member of West High School's class of 1955. Independent and spirited, Patty embodied a love of learning and exploration from a young age. In 1959, she famously purchased an MGA roadster and drove the Alaska Highway to Washington to pursue her education—then made the return journey upon completing her studies. She earned an associate degree in law transcription and went on to build a distinguished career as a legal secretary, admired for her precision, professionalism and dedication. In 1972, Patty married the love of her life, Burton Charles "Burt" Biss. The following year, they built their dream home in Wasilla, where they created a life grounded in partnership, purpose and quiet joy. For many years, Patty worked alongside Burt at the law firm of Biss and Holmes until her retirement in 1995. Patty's life was deeply enriched by her curiosity and reverence for the natural world. She found great joy in cultivating flowers and, together with Burt, spent many fulfilling years tending fruit trees and gardens at the family ranch in Oregon. Beyond her gardens, Patty was a woman of culture and creativity. She held a lifelong love for literature, art and music. In her 20s, she traveled to Florence, Italy, to study art—an experience she cherished and spoke of fondly throughout her life. She delighted in reading, cooking for those she loved, watching her favorite British programs on PBS and listening to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on weekends. She also treasured her close-knit book club, a group of dear friends who met for over 25 years to share their love of books and conversation. Patty was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Burton Charles Biss. She is survived by her son, Allison "Al" Biss and wife Shelley of Anchorage; grandchildren, Anika and David Biss; niece, Lori; and nephews, Bill and Rick. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Wasilla on Feb. 16, 2026, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association.
