Stanley Thomas Fischer passed away on Sept. 20, 2025, at the age of 82, from dementia and Parkinson's disease. Jeanne, his wife and soulmate, was by his side. Son of Irene and Harold Fischer in a family of seven, Stan was born and raised in Chicago, Ill. He was a paperboy at age 7, and went to school in a one-room schoolhouse. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps for three years. His mentors there encouraged him to pursue higher education. He became the valedictorian of Wright City College, and earned his B.A. from the University of Illinois — the first in his family to graduate from college. Meeting in college, Stan married Jeanne in 1969.
He went on to graduate from the University of Chicago law school. He began his professional career as a "Nader's Raider," consumer protection advocate and with legal aid, always remembering those who were struggling and less fortunate. Seeking adventure and the promise of the "Last Frontier," Stan and Jeanne moved to Juneau, Alaska, where he joined the state Attorney General's office and helped establish the Consumer Protection Section.
In 1978, he opened a private law practice in Kodiak, Alaska. After taking a year off to travel the world, they moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where Stan became the chief of the Anchorage Attorney General's office. He enjoyed fond memories with the community of lawyers there especially during the Alaska boom years. After the first retirement in 1998, Stan earned a Master of Arts in teaching. He taught English to ESL and high school students in Anchorage and also spent a summer teaching English in China. Always active, he enjoyed a lifetime inspired by nature and travel. He loved camping, fishing, hiking and biking. He and Jeanne hiked in England, the Grand Canyon, Pacific Crest, Brooks Range and Chilkoot trails.
He ran marathons through the California redwoods and in Australia. He relished lively discussions and laughter with friends at Friday coffee men's group, book club, lecture series, free-thinkers and the Unitarian forum. Stan was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings, William, Ronald, Gregory and Jane. Stan is survived by Jeanne, his wife of 56 years; sisters-in-law, Linda and Rita; nephews, Keith, James and Peter; and nieces, Dawn and Doreen.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Baxter Senior Living and Ancora Home Health and Hospice for their respectful and gentle care. They brought laughter and comfort to him in his final days. Stan was a humanist whose adventurous spirit, intellect and dedication to community enriched those who knew him. He took the road less traveled, making all the difference in his and others' lives. The community is welcome to share donations with their favorite charity in honor of Stan.
