Gregory David Moore was born on June 4, 1950, in Ohio, and passed away on Sept. 22, 2025. Greg was a man who cared about family, education and the outdoors.
As a young man, Greg had an appreciation for nature, trekking across lakes in the Midwest and Canada. Greg came to Alaska to pursue a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). After graduating, he worked as a biologist which took him to Kotzebue. There he met Nellie Ward, the woman who would remain the love of his life for four decades.
In Kotzebue, Greg learned how to dog mush. Greg mushed for years and helped start the Kobuk 440, a mid-distance dog race. One of his favorite dogsled trips was with Nellie through the Cape Krusenstern National Monument.
Greg always understood the value of education, for himself and others. After working in biology, Greg returned to UAF to pursue a master's degree in computer science. As a student, in the 1990s, Greg, developed software to support distance education programs. Greg also contributed as a lead engineer to build overland broadband networks used in rural Alaska.
Greg enjoyed teaching. He taught at the UAF, Chukchi Campus in Kotzebue where many shared that he helped them gain confidence in math. He also taught graduate students network design at Alaska Pacific University for seven years.
Greg, an accomplished electrical engineer and biologist, and his wife Nellie, who herself was an award-winning journalist, shared an enthusiasm for supporting the education of others and were able to break barriers. In 2000, Greg and Nellie co-founded Independent Native News, one of the first programs to utilize the internet for distribution to radio stations nationwide.
Family was an important factor in Greg's life. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Findeis Moore and Gloria Jean Moore (Lewis); and beloved wife, Nellie Ann Moore (Ward). He is survived by his children, David Moore and Elizabeth Cravalho; and grandchildren Blair, Dylan and Alika.
A celebration of life was held for Greg at Kehl's Legacy Chapel in Anchorage, on Sept. 27, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nellie Moore Journalism Scholarship Fund (Alaska Community Foundation) or KOTZ Radio.
