Lieutenant Colonel George Roy Perkins Sr., 93, of Summerfield, N.C., died on Friday, May 23, 2025, at his home with his family at his bedside.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 11 a.m., at St. Pius X Catholic Church, followed by a reception in the Simmons Center. Burial with full military honors will begin at 1:30 p.m., at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

George was born on Dec. 13, 1931, in DeQuincy, La., the son of Edgar and Lillian Roy Perkins.

George was a graduate of DeQuincy High School and Northwestern State University where he excelled on the football field. At Northwestern, he was in the ROTC as well as the Phi Epsilon Kappa fraternity and studied health and physical education. George was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring in 1983. He was active with the Air Defense Artillery and was an Air Operations Officer serving many years in foreign service, including Germany, Korea and Vietnam, and was the recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and many others. Following retirement, George opened Perkins Real Estate in Alaska, where he also enjoyed fishing, and continued the business in Greensboro and Summerfield. George was a Master Clock Repairman, fixing clocks in Germany, Alaska and North Carolina, and earned the title Clock Doctor to those he knew.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Mary Ann Nichols Perkins; daughter, Diane Edwards; brothers, Howard and Edward Perkins; and sister, Elizabeth Whatley.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Jacque Perkins and Janet Durham, both of Greensboro N.C., and Teresa Martin (Paul) of Eagle River, Alaska; son, George Perkins Jr. of Summerfield; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family asks with gratitude that memorials in George's name be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2210 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC 27408.
