Nov 16, 2024
Margaret Anne Sloan was born in Houston, Texas to Mabry and Adele Collins. She passed away in Tucson, Ariz. and was preceded by her parents; her stepfather, Barney Herring; her husband, Bob; her son, Sean; her siblings, Arlene, Loretta and Louis; her grandsons, Damon and Michael. She is succeeded by her daughters, Letha, Roberta, and Arletta; her brother, Charles; her grandchildren, Andrew, Tiffany, Braden, Jason, Erica, Morgan, Jordan, and Mitchell; as well as nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and one great-great-great granddaughter.
Margaret and her husband, Bob were introduced by a co-worker, while working at the US Post Office in Houston, Texas, and married soon after. Within a year, their first child, Letha joined them, quickly followed by Roberta, and Sean. The Sloans moved to a rural area near Palmer, Alaska, where their youngest daughter, Arletta soon joined them. Life was hard, but Margaret was tough. Her husband was often working far from home, while she, literally, kept the home fires burning with a wood stove, no plumbing, and sometimes no electricity. She and Bob spent some time in Seward, Alaska where Margaret furthered her education, learning German in the process.
Margaret had varied jobs in her life. She was a mail handler, a school bus driver, a public librarian, and an accounting clerk at the AK Dept. of Natural Resources. She and Bob retired to Mammoth, Ariz. taking most of the family with them.
Margaret enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, writing, drawing, painting, gardening, and taking nature walks with the children and grandchildren. She believed that children should be surrounded by music, good books, and art.
Margaret was agnostic, but was respectful of the beliefs of others and encouraged her children to explore the possibilities.
She will be cremated and her ashes returned to Alaska, where she spent her time raising her family. A memorial service on Zoom will be scheduled soon. Please stay in touch with family members, if you would like to attend.
