Dorothy Ann Hunter was born on Aug. 13, 1936, at the hospital in Mt. Village, Alaska, to John Parks Sr. and Bernadette Demientieff. She was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Oney Amowak of Marshall, Alaska. She passed on May 19, 2024, from complications due to emergency surgery.
She married Vernon Hunter Sr. in 1956; they lived in Nyac, Marshall, Fairbanks and Chugiak. After Vernon passed, she moved to Anchorage, residing at Chester Park senior housing. She was Catholic, attended churches in Fairbanks, Eagle River, and St. Patrick's in Muldoon.
She attended school in Marshall and Mt. Edgecombe High, and graduated from AK Business College in 1979 with her daughter Mareldine.
She was a nurse aide at the Mt. Edgecombe hospital, a postal worker at Nyac and Marshall, and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, commuting patients from Chugiak to Anchorage for treatments. She sold daffodils for the Cancer Society, raised money for the March of Dimes and cleaned altar linen - St. Andrew's - for many years. Her family donated money, time/talent to help build St. Andrew's first church in Eagle River. She was Treasurer for the Anchorage Native Fiddlers for 11 years.
She loved singing, sewing, crocheting, fishing, camping, dancing, cooking, boating and berry picking. She raised eight kids; two were born with Muscular Dystrophy. Her strong faith and praying helped get her through life's challenges with grace and dignity.
Survivors are daughter and son-in-law, Mareldine (David) Leuer; sons, Vernon Jr. and Daryl Hunter; grandkids (spouses/partners), Jeremy and Jesse Robinson, Marissa Leuer (Kevin Watson), Roseann Leuer (Christopher Benton), Amanda (Alvaro) Tobar, and Miranda (Dustin) Morrison, Brittany and Taylor Hunter; many great-grandchildren, relatives/friends throughout Alaska and the Lower 48.
She was preceded in death by her spouse of 45 years, Vernon Hunter Sr; daughters, Bernice Chouinard, Vivian Robinson; son and daughters, Dale, Deborah and LaVerne Hunter; and great-granddaughter, Roberta Leuer. She is the last known deceased of the Parks family.
A service will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on June 5, 2024; viewing 1-2 p.m., Mass at 2 p.m. It will be livestreamed and on their Facebook page as an "event" for those unable to attend.
