Mar 11, 1937 -

Mar 26, 2024

George Raymond Setuk was born in Koggiung on the Kvichak River in Bristol Bay in 1937 to Fefa Setuk and Helen Marie Woods. He was the eldest of Helen's eleven children. George was preceded in death by his parents; and by brothers, Eddie and Andrew Setuk and David and Gerald Herrmann; and by sisters, Ella Charley, Helen Austerman, and Anna Stroman. He is survived by his brother, Ernie Setuk; and sisters Adelheid Herrmann and Betty Harris-Miller. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces, in laws, cousins, and dear friends of many years. He leaves behind his stepdaughters, Kristina, Kratina, and beloved grandson, John Gallant (Don Juan) as well as many other grandchildren in that family. George lived many years near his family in Kenai and had been in the process of trying to move closer to his Gallant family in Anchorage when he passed.

He had lived in Koggiung, Levelock, Sitka, Naknek, Anchorage, Eklutna, and possibly more places around the state. He traveled Alaska extensively in his role as a hunting guide beside his friend, pilot, and partner "Captain" George Thiele. In his younger years, George ran a dog team and trap lines and lived in trappers' cabins upriver on the Kvichak. He was a commercial fisherman and could navigate waterways all over the United States. He loved the outdoors and practiced and advocated for subsistence fishing and hunting. For several years, he traveled to Mexico for vacations, and he reported that people there mistook him for a native of Mexico. It was there that he learned his favorite and never-ending catch phrase, "No Problemo".

There was not a Louie L'Amour book that George had not read. He kept them all and re-read them several times over. He loved to work the New York Times crossword puzzles. He had a great sense of humor and to the end gifted those around him with belly laughs. His life was not always an easy one, but he always lived it with courage, strength and a positive attitude.

Service will be April 20, 2024 @ 2 p.m. with a potluck to follow at the Life Church, 12245 Jerome Street, Anchorage, Alaska 99516.
