Nov 24, 2023
Born on July 7, 1941, in Greene county, Ill., Darryl R. Logan passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Nov. 24, 2023, at the age of 82, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family and lots of love on Thanksgiving Day. Darryl was preceded in death by his daughter, Toni Logan Goodrich; and brothers, Tom and Vernon Logan. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Willie Logan; daughter, Jennifer Logan Meyhoff; grandchildren, Blake and Alexandra Meyhoff, and Logan Goodrich; and brother, John Logan.
Darryl made his home in Alaska beginning in 1960, when he moved from the Midwest with his brother John. He and Willie met at UAF and lived in many locations across the state. His professional work involved several disciplines. He initially worked for Alaska Fish and Game as a stream guard, resulting in incredible stories! He and Willie worked as station managers for Wien Airlines in several remote villages, then he worked for more than a decade with the FAA as air traffic controller and in labor relations. He was an entrepreneur and owned a variety of businesses. His firm "Employee Assistance Consultants of Alaska," employee assistance/counseling/business management programs, brought the very first employee assistance program to the State of Alaska for individuals, families and employers. Darryl was a lifelong learner. He served as a consultant to industry, and continued learning at various educational institutions, among them: Rutgers University, UAA, Hazelden Foundation/Johnson Institute and others. He also offered trainings and taught programs at these schools from time to time. In Anchorage he founded The Threshold Foundation, a resource for families dealing with chemical dependency issues of loved ones. More recently, Darryl served as a Board Member and Chairman of the Finance Committee at Chester Park where he lived. He also coordinated educational seminars for fellow residents there for a number of years.
As friends and family know well, Darryl had many interests and hobbies. He was a pilot, a fisherman, a dedicated poker player and an accomplished gardener. Darryl particularly enjoyed growing orchids, tending the Japanese gardens he created and maintaining a greenhouse atrium. He was an actively involved leader and participant in the Alaska Jaycees - Junior Chamber of Commerce - for many years and built lifelong friendships. He and Willie together developed an extensive collection of original Alaskan art work, which they currently display and share throughout Chester Park for the benefit of all who live there.
Darryl was a generous, thoughtful person, a valued friend and devoted family man. He influenced a great many people and enjoyed helping others his entire life. He was an excellent teacher and mentor. He will be greatly missed.
A "Celebration of Life" event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, from 4-6 p.m., at the Alaska Aviation Museum on Lake Hood, 4721 Aircraft Drive, in his honor, where friends and family are welcome to share a favorite story or memory. If you choose in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the hospice organization in your community.
