Oct 22, 2023
Martin Fredrick Johnson, avid hockey player, gifted artist, dog lover, entrepreneur and doting father, passed away on Oct. 22, 2023, due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis at Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. His daughter Summer and son Luc were able to bid him goodbye. He was 67.
The fourth of six children, Martin was born on Dec. 10, 1955, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Hazel Rantala Johnson and Floyd Raymond Johnson. Growing up in Alaska and the Middle East, Martin lived in Iran (1961-62) and Turkey (1968-69) before moving permanently to Anchorage, where he attended Service and played on the hockey team.
Along with helping build the trans-Alaska pipeline in the '70s, Martin worked in sales and logistics for lighting companies, including Klondike Sales, where he helped manage the sale of the candy cane light poles in the North Pole. Later, he worked for oil companies, including Pioneer Natural Resources and Caelus Energy.
Drawn to the counterculture and those who questioned authority, Martin loved watching SNL in the '80s. He also enjoyed doing silly impressions for his children. He adored his dogs, Ranger, Neon and Cato. Martin was agnostic but seemed to believe in a power greater than himself.
Preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Maggie Johnson, Sara Lynch and Ellie Burnett, Martin is survived by his ex-wife, Brenda Levesque; daughter, Summer Johnson-Thomas; grandson, Kaius Thomas; and son, Luc Johnson, all of Anchorage; brother, William Johnson of Chickaloon, Alaska; sister, Louise Lane of Anchorage; four nieces; and two nephews.
A memorial celebration for Martin is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Kincaid Chalet, 6998 Raspberry Rd, Anchorage AK 99502. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to a GoFundMe for Martin's beloved Samoyed dog, Cato: https://www.gofundme.com/f/yearly-vet-expenses-for-cato.
