Emily Jayne Lamoreaux, age 77, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness. She was best known for her dry wit and readiness to take on challenges.
Emily and her husband Bill grew up in Menlo Park, Calif. They met working summer jobs with the City of Menlo Park and both graduated from San Joe State University. She joked she received her PHT degree, but was in fact a serious student, receiving her B.A. in social work. After graduating they were ready for adventure. So, in 1971, they packed up and drove north for a new life in Alaska. Emily embraced their new lifestyle: hunting, fishing, rafting, canoeing and sailing, as well as becoming involved in their community. Emily also investigated genealogy on both sides of the family and enjoyed regular craft group gatherings. As the family expanded, Emily supported their many endeavors ferrying their three kids to soccer, judo, piano lessons, first jobs and ski meets.
Emily volunteered for the Anchorage School District as a classroom assistant from 1978 through 1986, then worked full time as a Teacher Assistant-Special Education for 16 years, at Mt. Illiamna and Bowman elementary schools. She also served for several years with the Huffman/O'Malley Community Council, representing homeowners in her neighborhood.
Emily and her family expanded and remodeled their family home, mostly by themselves, starting in 1985 and later, upgraded a cabin on family property in the California redwood country. Over the years, they traveled frequently, often driving between Alaska and California, visiting friends and family in the western states, rafting the Grand Canyon and flying to Hawaii.
Emily was proud of her family and kept up with them through changes and distance.
She will be remembered for her strength, love and support for her family and friends.
Emily is survived by her husband, Bill; sons, Jason of Anchorage and Clint of Woodland, Wash.; daughter, Renee Lamoreaux Taylor of Sedona, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Brennan, Landon, Joran, Sydney, Bryn and Alexa; and sister, Betty Frazer of Spokane, Wash.
A "Celebration of Life" is planned for the coming spring 2024.
