Jane Middleton

Jane Middleton, 88, of Homer, Alaska, passed away on July 29, 2023. She was born on July 30, 1935, to Henry and Lulu Middleton. Jane is survived by her siblings, Pam Hooker, Jeff Middleton and Cindy Graham; sister-in-law, Joyce Middleton; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lulu and Henry Middleton; brothers, Henry King, Herb and Tim; and nephew, Derin Middleton of Florida.

Jane was born in New Jersey and, with her family, traveled up the Alaska Highway as a young teen, returning east for Georgetown Prep School in New Jersey. She went on to pursue higher education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Eastern Washington University. Jane taught math and biology at West High School in Anchorage, at Kenai Peninsula College in Homer, volunteered in many classrooms, fields, beaches and labs, and enthusiastically pursued her passions of science and education lifelong. She loved wild nature, and enjoyed fishing, skiing, hiking, writing and documenting her life and work. Her greenhouse and gardens were always a joy to visit. In her last years she wrote and completed a wonderful book about her family's homestead journey.

A ceremony to honor Jane's life will be held on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at 4 p.m., at Homer Methodist Church, 177 East End Road in Homer. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Jane Middleton's dedication to education, environment, and her love for children will be remembered by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
