Bud graduated from high school in California in 1958 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy, where he served with honor. After his service in 1964, he made his move to Barrow, Alaska, where he worked for the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory as a fireman. He soon made Barrow his home and began his civic and volunteer services. He played a pivotal role in founding the Barrow Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Chief as well as Fire Chief for the NSB Fire Department. His commitment extended to the Barrow Volunteer Search and Rescue, where he played a crucial role as member and President throughout, contributing to the safety and welfare of those in need. Additionally, Bud served as a longtime board member for BUECI, NSBSD School Board member, City Council Member and Lions Club Member, serving as President for these organizations throughout his service. He also started and owned his longtime business "Buds Marina."
Beyond his professional career, family was most valuable to him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was also father figure and Aapa – grandpa - to many. He enjoyed hunting and providing for his family. Bud is also known for an early trek from Barrow to Fairbanks, in 1969, by snowmachine alongside James Peacock, and the late Luther Leavitt and Jack Frantz. His favorite pastime included playing his guitar and singing gospel and country music.
