Wilford Cleon Martin, known to his friends as Bill, died on July 18, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. He was 91. He was survived by his wife of 65 years, Loretta Martin; daughters, Dana Smith and Gina Borland; sons-in-law, Ric Smith and Pat Borland; grandchildren, Nicole Borland, Kyle Borland, Leticia Jensen, Travis Jensen, Loralie Baus, Brian Baus, Gordon Smith and Kiera LeBlanc; great-grandchildren, Brianna Jensen, Amelia Jensen, Ben Baus and Van Baus; and brother, Robert Martin of Soquel, Calif.

Bill was born on Oct. 1, 1931, in Sanitarium, Calif. He served in the Army, and in 1953 earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, and a Combat Infantry Badge.

Bill qualified Expert Marksman in the Army, and went on to win The National Rifle Association Pistol Regional Championship in 1965, held the title of State of Alaska, Indoor/Outdoor Pistol Champion in 1969. He had a National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice medal for excellence in competition.

Bill moved his family to Alaska in 1962. He worked as a journeyman roofer, then after surviving a small plane accident, became a dental lab technician and eventually a school bus driver/trainer.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved outdoor adventures. He was known for his mild manner and his sense of humor. With Bill, everyone had at least one nickname. He really enjoyed discovering what made people individuals, and his chuckle lightened the weight of any room.

Family came first to Bill and his last wish was for the family to help the love of his life, Loretta, through this trying time.

He will be remembered in a private family ceremony overlooking his beloved town, Anchorage, Alaska.
