Linda Dianne Scott (nee Boegel) of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away on July 1, 2023, at the age of 76. She was born in Greeley, Colo., to June and Earl Boegel and moved with her family to Alaska in 1949. Linda is survived by her beloved husband of 36 years, Douglas Scott. Linda was the second eldest in a family of six children: Bob, Tim, Rod, Marty and Mark. She grew into her role of caregiver and keeper of family stories and traditions. Linda was a person who had a heart overflowing with love. She stepped in whenever needed to join in the raising and care of many children in her wide and extended family. She touched the lives of so many and will be lovingly remembered by her stepchildren, Jeff Scott and Tina Scott; grandchildren, Greg Scott, Arthur Scott and Judith Scott and their spouses; and many great-grandchildren. In addition, she was like a second mother to many nieces and nephews, Christian Penn, Andrew Peterson, Chloe Boegel, Sarah Waldron, Seth Boegel, Samatha Painter, Shaine Nix and Nathan Boegel, having cared for them during times of family crisis. She is also survived by her sister, Marty Peterson; and sister-in-law, Sharon Boegel. Her great-grandchildren and great-nieces and -nephews will also carry her in their hearts.
Linda loved Alaska, delighting in the people, the history and her beloved mountains and wildflowers. She and her husband spent 36 wonderful years together sharing many adventures, surmounting many challenges and just enjoying life with a treasured partner. They particularly enjoyed exploring the areas around Hatcher Pass, the hiking areas around Portage Glacier, and spent many days camping at Byers Lake. Linda was very close to her mother, June Boegel, and like her mom was a highly skilled seamstress and a person of incredible artistry and creativity. As a young adult, she went to work for Pauline Erickson as a clerk for Thrifty Fabrics in the Mt. View neighborhood. The Erickson family, including Marjorie McConnell, Joan and Arne Erickson, had a long-standing relationship with the Boegels, but were particularly close to Linda. It wasn't long before she grew into managing the store. As the Erickson's grew their business, Linda was soon managing two additional stores, the Fabric Tree in downtown Anchorage, and The Three Sisters at the University Center. Linda eventually purchased Thrifty Fabrics and owned and operated the store for many years. She closed it not long after her mother's death in 1985. Linda was widely loved by her customers, helping them with plans from standard projects all the way to wedding dresses, sled dog booties and sled bags, theater costumes and ballet tutus! She would regularly ship samples and products into the bush, having a loyal yet remote customer base. A favorite story involved Linda using tea to dye some lace to help a bride perfectly match her needs. This was just the kind of person Linda was: someone who never hesitated to go above and beyond to help another person. The fabric store was also where she made her dearest lifelong friends, LeMiel Chapman and her wife Woltraud Barron. Linda was a longtime volunteer in Mt. View Elementary and Tyson Elementary. She began by volunteering in her niece and a nephew's classrooms and continued on for her grandchildren and then for all the children in the Mt. View area. She was known and loved by many of the children and teachers around Tyson Elementary as Grandma Linda.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Linda on July 21, 2023, at the Anchorage Bridge Center, 639 W International Airport Road, Suite #10, from 6-9 p.m. You are encouraged to bring stories, memories and photos to share as we gather to remember and honor the love she generously shared with so many. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her honor to the Food Bank of Alaska.
