Jul 5, 2023

Charlotte Schendel Angst of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away on July 5, 2023, at age 76. Chottie was born on May 20, 1947, in Bay City, Mich., and was the eldest of four girls of Lyndon and Doris Schendel. She grew up in Austin and White Bear Lake, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1965.

Chottie graduated from Lake Forest College in Illinois in 1969, with a major in German and a teaching certification. She began her teaching career in Zion, Ill., and continued in Northbrook, Ill., before moving to Juneau, Alaska, in 1974.

She married Woody Angst on Aug. 7, 1971. They have two children, Susan Rymzo (Matt Rymzo) and John Angst (Allison Reed); as well as four grandchildren, Isabel and Harper, and Laren and Laird. In Juneau, Chottie worked for the State of Alaska, with the Dept. of Education administering the GED program, with the Dept. of Labor supporting the Gifted-Talented program, and with the Alaska Legislature. After her children were born, Chottie completed her master's degree in education at the University of Alaska Southeast and worked at Hearthside Books with a special interest in children's literature. In 1991, the Angsts moved to Anchorage, driving the Alaska Highway in January. Chottie resumed her career, teaching at Sand Lake and O'Malley Elementary Schools in Anchorage. She retired in 2016. In her spare time Chottie was team mom, chaperone, timer, and stroke and turn judge for her children's sport teams, as well as host mom for visiting athletes and Rotary exchange students. She was very active in PEO, serving as Chapter President, and in the Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir and serving as an elder and a deacon and on numerous committees.

Chottie's adventures were memorable. She camped, skied across Admiralty Island, caught salmon from a canoe as well as by fly fishing on the Kenai River, dip netting on the Kasilof and Copper Rivers, and setnet fishing at Raspberry Island. She loved to travel and often went to the end of the road. She enthusiastically joined family and friends for bike rides, hikes, cross-country skis and social gatherings filled with happy laughter and joyful singing.

Chottie is remembered best for her willingness to help others, her warm smile and her infectious giggle. She was a great lady and a loving wife, mother, sister and friend.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, at 2 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Anchorage.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Chottie's memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Anchorage, PEO Chapter C in Anchorage or Alzheimer's Resource of Alaska in Anchorage.
