Dave Kurtz

Feb 9, 1962 -

May 20, 2023

We are sad to announce that David Laurence Kurtz passed away in Ocala, Fla., on May 20, 2023, at the age of 61. He had extensive health problems, but was finally able to find comfort at Hospice of Marion County the last few days.

Dave was born in Anchorage and spent most of his life in Alaska. He was an exceptionally talented mechanic which led to a very successful career in aviation. He learned to be an airplane mechanic in Bethel and earned his IA working for Cape Smythe Air in Barrow, Alaska, where he met his wife Mariann Waade Kurtz. They moved to Anchorage in 1995, where he hired on as airplane mechanic for Security Aviation. That led to a position as Director of Maintenance and finally as part owner and VP in 2007. Dave took pride in keeping the airplanes and hangar in immaculate shape and he was well-respected in the airline community.

Dave loved fast cars and all powerful RVs. He fixed up several cars and could wheelie for miles on motorcycles. There was lots of fun times at his cabin on Big Lake: snowmachining in the winter, waterskiing in the summer and lots of bonfires with good company.

Dave appreciated the warmer climate of Oregon and Florida for his last remaining years.

He is survived by his wife, Mariann Waade Kurtz; sister, Kris Abegg and husband Joe Abegg.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Aug. 30, 2023, at 5 p.m., at Security Aviation Hangar, 6121 South Airpark Place, Anchorage, AK 99502.
