Gloria Self

Jun 7, 1953 -

May 13, 2023

Gloria Self, 69, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away on May 13, 2023, while holding the hands of her daughter and best friend.

Gloria was born on June 7, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah. While staying with family in Shafter, Calif., she caught the eye of a handsome young man who lived next door. She married Sidney W. Self in 1970, and gave birth to their only child shortly thereafter. She moved to Anchorage in 1976, where she remained for the next 47 years.

During her time in Anchorage, she found a career path in the payroll and bookkeeping field. With only a GED, she relied on her strong work ethic and eagerness to learn to develop her skills and subsequent promotions. Before retirement, she worked for Swank Construction, the job she loved the most.

She loved the simple things in life, including reading, being at "fish camp," babysitting her grand-doggie, Bear, and watching the cranes and swans in her backyard.

Gloria is survived by her beloved daughter, Linda Self; and best friend, Mark Swank. She also leaves behind five siblings, Rose Wright, Catherine Thayer, Ilene Dugger, Terry Thayer and Tony Thayer; sister-in-law, Pat Self; nephews, Brandan Chetwood, RJ Chetwood, Scott Henslee and Tyler Henslee; and a handful of close friends.

She was preceded in death by her forever love, Sidney W. Self; mother and stepfather, Marian and Carl Cloud; parents-in-law, Sidney P. and Modene Self; and nephews, Robby Johnson and Darren Henslee.

At Gloria's request, no formal funeral service will be held. A small gathering will be held later in summer 2023, when a portion of her ashes will join her husband at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery and the remaining will be scattered at her favorite fishing spot on the Kenai River.
