Longtime Alaska resident Dean Lust, 85, passed away on April 16, 2023, in Wasilla, Alaska. A service will be held on May 19, 2023, at Wasilla Bible Church in Wasilla, at 4 p.m. His ashes will be placed in the Fairview Cemetery in Monroe, Iowa, in summer 2023.
Dean was born in Newton, Iowa. Dean married the love of his life and college sweetheart, Darlene "Petesy" Callies on June 11, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2021.
The couple met at Simpson College. Dean moved to Alaska in 1959 after graduation. Petesy followed two years later. They had two children: Scott and Carla. They lived in Anchorage for over 20 years and spent summers in Seward. He and Petesy spent another 15 years living as nomads either on their sailboat Jedi, cruising the Pacific including Mexico and Hawaii, or in their RV touring America. In their later years, Dean and Petesy put down roots in Chickaloon. After Petesy's passing, Dean moved to Wasilla.
Dean and Petesy were founders and owners of Sailing Inc. The couple brought the sailing lifestyle to many Alaskans as they sold sailboats and ran a sailing school. Together, they taught over 600 Alaskans how to sail and encouraged others to live out their dreams.
Dean was an Iowa Hawkeye basketball fanatic. He knew all about the players and loved all things, Hawkeye!
Dean leaves behind his children and their families, Scott and Andria Lust and their children, Jazlyn and Orion of Wasilla; and Carla and Gary Goldberg and their children, Colin and Brooke, of El Paso, Texas; and brother, Gary.
In lieu of donations or flowers, please do what Dean would have wanted you to do - put down all your electronic devices and spend time talking to and enjoying your loved ones.
