Mar 20, 2023

Phillip Kent Livingston, adventurer, husband, father, Marine, lifelong aviator "forever lured by the excitement of the unknown," passed away on March 20, 2023. He was born on Feb. 17, 1936, to Cyril and Geraldine Livingston in Pittsburgh, Pa. Phil liked to say he was made tough by starting out a skinny little kid who went away to school and came back taller and feistier than all the bullies. He attended the Hill School, then Dartmouth College where he played D1 lacrosse for four years, graduating in 1958. After college, Phil enlisted straight into the United States Marine Corps as an officer and became a fighter pilot, flying the A4D Skyhawk.

He married Jean Morris in 1960, and had four children, a son and three daughters, who he took on numerous adventures via plane, boat and foot. Whether flying cross country with his family or sailing on Puget Sound on the weekends, his children saw him as a bold and charismatic father.

His numerous adventures included flying to the tip of South America and half way around the world with his good friend Doug Cashens in his bright yellow 1942 Staggerwing Beechcraft biplane. He was a consummate skier, hiker, diver, sailor, canoeist, pilot, businessman as well as a lover of jazz and literature.

His spirit of adventure led him to Alaska to become a bush pilot where in 1981, he married Diana Stone Livingston, his partner in adventure, business, community service and love for over 40 years. Phil remained in Girdwood, Alaska, becoming a commercial real estate broker in Anchorage while volunteering as a ski patroller at Alyeska Ski Resort. He joined Rotary International, was a charter member and first club president, and served in many Rotary projects. Phil became Rotary District 5010 Governor and traveled extensively with his wife Diana and the Flying Rotarians around Alaska, Russia, and Canada, promoting humanitarian and goodwill causes.

Philip will always be loved by those who survive him: wife, Diana Livingston; four children, Philip Kent Livingston Jr., Kristin Livingston-Wilmer, Juliann Clum and Tara Jean Livingston; two stepchildren, Michelle Stone Bittner and Eben Stone; and their families including nine grandchildren; sister, Ann Livingston Reed; former wife, Jean Morris Livingston Brown; and his beloved, loyal dog, Pete.

A private viewing for the immediate family will be held at Kehl's Chapel, and a military burial service with the immediate family will be conducted at Fort Richardson.

Phil's friends and family will be invited to join in a celebration of Phil's life at a later date. The time and venue will be announced.
