Karen Goertz, born Karen Louise Cyr in Whitehorse, Canada, passed away on March 14, 2023, in Anchorage, Alaska. She was 72.
Karen moved to Anchorage in her elementary years and was valedictorian of the first graduating class of Dimond High School in 1968. She married Richard Goertz in 1974 and together they started Goertz Construction. The Goertz clan was formed with the additions of Kym, Kori and Brad, who have all made Anchorage home. Two Brians and a Rachel joined the family, and it was complete when Karen became a proud and fun Nana to grandchildren Sage, Chase and Tess Dixon, and Camira, Willa and Jones Goertz. She imparted many gifts including generous giving of herself through volunteering and supporting others, her ability to proofread anything to perfection and the importance of thank you notes. Her most significant quality is that Karen was someone who could always be counted on.
Karen was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 2014. She is survived by her children and their families; stepsister, Tina Cyr; and stepmother, Alice Cyr. In death, she is reunited with her mother, Lois Groven; father, Paul Cyr; stepfather, Howard Groven; and her husband of 40 years, Richard.
Karen was a consummate volunteer, and often earned a mailbox in the staff room of any school her children attended. While no service is planned, if you wish to honor Karen, please consider donating time and supporting causes important to you. And please forgive any mistakes or misuse of big words in this text; we no longer have mom to check our work.
