Alice Elizabeth (Chmiel) Dial

Sep 26, 1945 -

Feb 6, 2023

Longtime Alaska resident Alice Elizabeth Dial, 77, passed away on Feb. 6, 2023, at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, with her husband and son by her side. She fought her cancer for over 20 years. Alice was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, to Gladys Larson Chmiel and Stanley Chmiel, Alice graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1963. Gladys, along with siblings and parents Fred and Laura Larson, were original Colonists in the Matanuska Valley, arriving in 1935. The family had a potato farm in Palmer, where Alice spent many childhood summers planting, tending crops and harvesting.

Aside from living in International Falls, Minn., for a short time as a young girl, Alice grew up in Anchorage and lived in Alaska for 75 years. Alice had been a resident of Wasilla from 1989 until her passing.

Alice's son, Wade, was born in 1967 in Anchorage and graduated from Dimond High School. Alice married Bud Dial, the love of her life, in February 1981. The family moved to Bethel, Alaska, for two years in 1982, and she began her state employment with Health and Social Services. Moving back to Anchorage, she went to work for the State Department of Transportation, and State Department of Veterans Affairs. She began work as a 911 Dispatcher for Palmer Police Department and retired in 2000.

Alice was a beautiful soul: down to earth, witty and loved time with family and friends. Perhaps her greatest joy, aside from her family, was gardening. Alice touched countless people throughout her life with her kindness, love and generosity. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Preceded in passing by her parents, Gladys and Maurice Dixson; father, Stanley Chmiel; brothers, Joe Chmiel, Donald Chmiel and Kenny Chmiel; sister, CarolAnn Chmiel. Survived by her husband, Bud Dial; son, Wade Thomas; granddaughter, Kirsten Thomas; great-granddaughter, Claire Warren; stepson, Rodney (Lisa) Dial; stepdaughter, Rhonda (Tim) Ackman; brothers, Morgan Chmiel, William (Irina) Dixson; Richard (Ginny) Dixson; sister, Ruth Dixson McPherren (Guy) McPherren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial will be held at Scenic Park Bible Church in Anchorage on March 11, 2023, at 11 a.m.
