Sep 13, 2022
Douglas William Hall died on Sept. 13, 2022, at City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, Calif., after a two-year battle with aplastic anemia. Doug was born on Feb. 2, 1950, to Mary and Earl Hall in Washington, D.C. He graduated from George Mason University with a B.A. in business in 1972. He moved to Alaska in 1975, where he first worked on the pipeline as a member of the IBEW.
Doug started work at Anchorage Municipal Light and Power in 1977. He retired from ML&P in 2011, after 34 years of service. When he retired he was the Chief Power Dispatcher, or the man who kept the lights on for Anchorage.
Doug was the father of twin sons: Kyle Hall of Denver, Colo., and Travis Hall of Boise, Idaho. His biggest delight was talking about his sons, always with pride and with the knowledge that they had both grown up to be good men with wonderful wives and families. He loved his three grandchildren beyond anything and it is regretted that he did not live long enough to really spoil them, which he said was his job as a grandfather.
Doug met Penny Zobel in 2009, and they married in 2013. They both retired in 2011, then splitting their time between Anchorage and Indio, Calif., fishing in Prince William Sound and golfing in Indio.
Doug had an infectious grin and laugh and loved telling stories. He was an infinitely good man, kind and always willing to help, serving in the community as a volunteer as well as helping neighbors. He was counted as a good friend by many and had the respect and liking of his peers. He was a man of integrity, honesty and was hard working. He loved his family and life itself. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. He left us way too early.
He is survived by his wife, Penny Zobel; sons, Kyle and Travis and their families; stepson, Wade Zobel and his family; three brothers; and a sister. A celebration of Doug's life will be held in Indio on Dec. 9, 2022. Memorials should be sent to St Jude Children's Hospital, in lieu of flowers.
