Leif Hamilton Strand

Lifelong Alaskan Leif Strand, 83, passed away on Sept. 14, 2022, in Anchorage, Alaska, with his wife by his side.

Leif was born on April 13, 1939, in Anchorage, at the Old Railroad Hospital, to parents Leif Strand and Margaret Hamilton Strand. He worked most of his life in the Alaska Air National Guard and retired as Superintendent of Vehicle Maintenance at Kulis Air National Guard Base. Leif looked forward o going to work each day and enjoyed the people he worked with.

He was a life member of Pioneers of Alaska, a member of American Legion and Sons of Norway. Leif received awards including the Alaska Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Leif spent much time at his cabin at Big Lake, Alaska, waterskiing and teaching all the kids to ski. He later bought a truck and was a teamster for awhile. He bought a cabin near the Kenai River and especially enjoyed dip-netting. He and a friend bought a fishing boat and did long-lining for halibut. Leif had so many friends and enjoyed all his endeavors.

Leif leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife, Edel Strand of Anchorage; sister, Sigrid Strand Bryant of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Nathan Yelmene of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Naomi and Nikko Estes of Chugiak, Alaska; great-grandsons, Wesley and Ari Estes of Chugiak; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Leif and Margaret Strand; and stepson, Peter Yelmene.

There will be a funeral service held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street in downtown Anchorage, on Oct. 15, 2022, at 2 p.m., officiated by Rev. Rick Cavens.
