Joseph Francis Janke III

Mar 23, 1955 -

Jun 21, 2022

Joseph Francis Janke III died at home on June 21, 2022.

Joe was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 23, 1955, to Joseph Jr. and Phyllis Janke. The family moved from Michigan to Alaska in 1958, and Joe had been a resident of Eagle River since 1962, when his parents staked out a homestead in the South Fork area. He graduated from Chugiak High School and entered the construction field through an apprenticeship in the Carpenter's Union. After achieving his journeyman status, he took his homebuilding talents into his own business.

Joe was known for his intellect, dry humor and zest for life. He met the love of his life, Cindy Scanlon, in 1986, and they married in 1997. Joe built their unique, octagonal home in the South Fork Valley on land that had once been a homestead field.

In later years, he brought his creativity and craftsmanship to a new venture, making agate nightlights with Alaska themes. Joe and Cindy's booth was a fixture at the Saturday Market in Anchorage for many years and people from all over the world purchased his handmade creations.

Even while battling illness, Joe worked hard to overcome his limitations and keep a smile on his face. He looked forward to his regular workouts, and the family would like to thank the staff of the Eagle River Alaska Club for their kindness and support.

Joe is survived by his wife, Cindy; mother, Phyllis Janke; brothers, Dan and wife Carmen, Max Janke and Tim Hess; sisters, Patti Wilson, Margaret Janke and husband Jerry Jacobs; stepchildren, Jessica Barker and Eric Viertel. Uncle Joe will be fondly remembered and missed by his many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, as well as a large extended family in Michigan. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph F. Janke Jr.; and sister, Suzie Janke.

An informal celebration of life will be held at the family homestead, 6651 Hiland Road in Eagle River, on Sunday, July 17, 2022, from 2-5 p.m.
