Annie Leighton Baker died peacefully the evening of April 20, 2022, with her family by her side. She succumbed to an illness that progressively became more severe in the last few years.
She was born on Jan. 28, 1946, in McMinnville, Ore., the daughter of Robert and Edith Leighton. When she was 5 years old, the family moved to Eugene, Ore. Annie graduated from the University of Oregon and then moved to Alaska in 1970.
As a longtime resident of Anchorage, Alaska, Annie was a very active volunteer with many nonprofit organizations, especially those in the arts. She was a founding member of the Anchorage Opera Theater and a volunteer with the Anchorage Symphony as well as the Anchorage Republican Women's Club, serving as their representative to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce's original Recycling Committee. The Summer Bible Camp at First Presbyterian Church was added to her volunteer schedule each year.
Annie is survived by her husband Larry Baker. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 12, 2021, with close family and friends. Annie is also survived by her eldest daughter, Kayce Baker Flanagan and husband Richard Keener; grandchildren, Courtney Flanagan-Smith, Christian Flanagan, Madyson Baker, and Tacoma Sparks; and two great-grandsons, Cameron and Caleb Flanagan. She is also survived by her sister Patti LaKamp of Carmel, Calif.
Annie was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Kimberly Ann Baker; and brother, Larry Leighton.
Funeral services will be held on April 27, 2022, at 3 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 616 West 10th Avenue in Anchorage. The Reverend Matthew Schultz will be officiating.
