Tavita David Asi

Tavita David Asi passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2022. Born on April 11, 1943, in Independent Samoa, he was the third of five children born to Asi and Emi Falealo.

David was recruited by Alaska Methodist University, now Alaska Pacific University, where he earned his B.A. in 1972, and M.A. in 1975. In 1976, he returned to Samoa to be the Principal of Wesley College. David later came back to Alaska and taught for the Anchorage School District, at Wendler, Bartlett, S.A.V.E. and Benny Benson, until his retirement in 2017. He was also the Adult Learning Center VP and Treasurer.

His spare time was spent cheering on his grandkids, fishing, playing rugby, the guitar and driving his Trans Am. He took pride in performing both the Samoan Slap Dance and Fire Dance, and held a black belt in karate.

David's family is his living legacy.

He is survived by his five daughters, Seira (Mike) Greckel, Flora Teo, Tanya (Jameson) Rocho, Emi Asi and Makayla Asi; 13 grandchildren, Sunny, Eleni, Meagan and Trey, Bradley and Briley, Captain, Constantine and Carol-Andersen, Ezra, Alexis and Tavita, and Kagen. He is also survived by his brother, Peni (Sulami) Asi; sisters, Sina Ieremia and Lufi Taulealo; and nieces and nephews.

David is predeceased by his wife, Carol Asi (Cox); parents, Asi and Emi Falealo; sister, Tuau; and brothers-in-law, Vaipouli Ieremia and Logo Taulealo.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 1-3 p.m., at Benny Benson Alternative High School, 4515 Campbell Airstrip Road in Anchorage, Alaska. Parties should text their RSVP to 907-854-3122.
