Betty Irene Porter

May 1, 1930 -

Mar 17, 2022

Betty Irene (Leman) Porter, 91, was born on May 1, 1930, and passed away on March 17, 2022, surrounded by her loving daughter Cindy and devoted son Tom.

There will be a Funeral service on March 24, 2022, at 2:30 p.m., at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai, Alaska. She will be laid to rest at 1 p.m. on March 28, 2022, at the Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Orthodox Church Cemetery in Ninilchik, Alaska.

Betty was a fifth-generation Alaskan and the youngest of eight siblings born to Irene and Joseph Leman in Ninilchik. Growing up in Ninilchik could be a hard life in those days, but Betty possessed a strong work ethic and was very independent, even feisty at times. Because there was no high school in Ninilchik at that time, Betty graduated from Seward High School.

While Betty was working on Kodiak Island, she met Harry Tibbs, USMC, and they were married in 1950. They had three sons and one daughter together. In 1975, Betty married Clifford Porter.

She was especially active in the American Legion Auxiliary for several years and held many positions: Department President as well as Unit President in Anchorage, Kenai and Ninilchik.

After retirement from the State of Alaska Social Services, Betty enjoyed sharing stories of her travels throughout Alaska. In addition to traveling, Betty was an outstanding cook who loved entertaining family and friends.

She was a very dedicated and faithful member of the Russian Orthodox Church both in Ninilchik and Kenai. One of her most memorable trips was to Russia where she visited historical churches and spoke Russian with the locals.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband. Clifford Porter; sons, Brian Tibbs and Don Tibbs; brothers, Nick Leman, Joe, and Harry Leman; sisters, Juanita Bertoson, Ann Leman and Rose MacSwain.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Tulloch (Rob); son, Tom Tibbs; grandchildren, Brent, Jennifer and Kevin Tulloch, Yuri Tibbs, Shane Blakely; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
