Mar 11, 2022

Spencer Biegel, 67, passed away on March 11, 2022, at Alaska Regional Hospital surrounded by his wife and friends. He had a heart that loved so greatly that it finally gave away.

Spencer, the youngest of three boys, was born on Dec. 19, 1954, in Chicago, Ill., to Melvin and Dora (Wolinsky) Biegel. Spencer and his parents moved to Hallandale, Fla., in 1971, where he graduated from high school. He studied accounting at Miami-Dade College and worked various jobs before being lured by a friend to Alaska in 1988. Spencer and his friend sold leather goods out of a car and eventually started Alaska Leather. Sometime after the sale of the business, Spencer joined a health insurance firm. Later he started his own health insurance business, a business he enjoyed until his death.

In November 1997, Spencer met the love of his life, Dora Soria, and they married in July 2002. He gave his life to Jesus before a marriage that became not only a loving relationship, but a fun friendship and a great partnership. He supported her many activities and career with enthusiasm.

He dedicated his time to many endeavors throughout his life, including Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), Texas 4000, Major Management, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Alaska Association of Health Underwriters. Spencer enjoyed fishing, smooth jazz, dancing, singing, playing golf, gardening, feeding birds and nature, but his real passion was dealmaking. There was always something to buy and sell.

Spencer was a kind and gentle man. He was always willing to help others and took the time to really get to know people. Spencer had an infectious laugh and everyone said he gave the best hugs. He was also always ready with a joke or amusing story. Above all, he loved the Lord and loving on people.

Spencer is survived by his wife and best friend of almost 20 years, Dora; older brothers, Robert "Bob" (wife Arlene) and Donald Biegel (wife Nancy); aunt, Sheila Wolinsky; first cousins, Sue Herman, Steve Weiss (wife Irene), Rick Weiss (wife Melody), Wendy Yura (husband Mark), Rebecca Galante (husband Gus), Michael Wolinsky, Julie Wolinsky (husband Homi Arabshahi) and more. He also survived by his father-in-law, Jose Natividad Soria; Dora's brothers, Ruben Soria (wife Christy), Jose Raul Soria (wife Lucy), Jose Luis Soria (wife Gloria) and Jose Natividad Junior (wife Norma); and her sister, Maria Patricia Licon (husband Robert). He dearly loved his nieces, Alex, Amy, Briana, Dalia, Damaris, Jazmyn, Karla, Maria, Monica, Samantha, Tiara and Veronica; and nephews, Joe, Luis, Michael Joseph, Nicholas, Robert and Ruben. He cherished friends that were like brothers and sisters to him and his Trinity Church and BSF families. He will be missed by many.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2022, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 12310 Lorraine Street in Anchorage, Alaska. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, https://www.trinityalaska.org; or Bible Study Fellowship, https://www.bsfinternational.org/.
