Nov 30, 2021

Mathew Hans Dahl died suddenly on Nov. 30, 2021, at his home in Soldotna, Alaska. He was 64.

Born on June 9, 1957. in Anchorage, Alaska, Mathew was an avid pilot, fisherman, skier and outdoorsman. Following in his father's footsteps, Mathew combined his passion for guns and woodworking, carving custom rifle stocks. Mathew and his brothers loved to fly, a passion he turned into a career. He began flying professionally in Colorado Springs, Colo., but soon advanced to flying private and commercial jets all over the world. His travels took him to Addis Ababa, Saint Petersburg and the Maldives to name a few. Mathew and his wife Angela lived in Dubai and Oman, collecting mementos, friends and memories they brought back with them after settling for a quieter life in Soldotna.

Ever the hobbyist, Mathew took up numerous activities throughout the years, crafting handmade knives, playing the guitar and violin, riding motorcycles and making the perfect latte. His interests influenced his career, working as a commercial diver, police officer, coffee shop owner, commercial pilot and finally as an operations inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration. Mathew held a lifelong love of books, reading everything from Clive Cussler to The Gulag Archipelago — the final book sitting on his nightstand. He was working his way through the Booker list of winners and finalists before his death.

Mathew is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Florence Dahl. He is survived by his wife, Angela Mairs Dahl; children, Jordyn Dahl and Galen Dahl; Angela's children, Stephen Mairs and Ryan Mairs; brothers, Marc Dahl and Michael Dahl; sister Marsha, Oberlander; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held this summer, on June 11, 2022, at the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum.
