Betsy Hanson

Jan 20, 1933 -

Dec 18, 2021

Betsy Ann Hanson, 88, died peacefully on Dec. 18, 2021, at her home in Anchorage, Alaska.

Betsy was born in Shelbyville, Ky. in 1933. She was the youngest of four children, and was raised by the DeFoore family of Mississippi from the age of 10. Betsy graduated from Mississippi College in 1955 with a degree in elementary education. After graduation, she traveled to Alaska as a missionary, first in Kotzebue and then settled in Anchorage, working as a second grade teacher at Lake Otis Elementary School.

Betsy married Rolph Hanson in 1958. They built a log cabin together in Anchorage, and later staked their own homestead in the Big Lake area. Betsy worked tirelessly in the family businesses as manager of rental properties and assisted Rolph in subdividing land in the Mat-Su Valley.

Betsy's focus was always her family and she kept home life moving at a fast pace, encouraging her children to explore all that interested them. Betsy enjoyed painting, fishing, collecting antiques, and she always had a hot meal and Sunday morning pancake breakfasts for family and friends. She loved preparing gourmet meals for Anchorage Concert Association events and Wednesday dinners for her local church, and was active in the Anchorage Woman's Club.

Betsy is survived by her children, Ingrid, Dee, Audrey and Hans; nine grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; and cousin, Frank Figg. Betsy was preceded in death by her husband Rolph.

The family wishes to thank TLC Home Care and Midnight Sun Home Care for their help making it possible for Betsy to live at home in her final years, as well as Ancora Home Health and Hospice for their kindness and care.

A memorial service is planned for summer 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.
