Frances "Fran" Mae Urwin Carlos, 84, of Chugiak, Alaska, passed away on Dec. 28, 2021, from Alzheimer's complications. She was a resident at the Chugiak Senior Center since 2007. Fran was born in Manila, Utah, and was the youngest of 10 children to Joseph P. Urwin and Mildred Blanche Deck.

She was a lifelong member of The Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church and a current membership with the Bear Mountain Ward. She taught primary classes during the 1970s, and volunteered her time as the church needed.

She was a stay-at-home Mom and raised four children in Eagle River. After a divorce, she relocated back to Utah. She returned to Alaska in 1986 to live out the rest of her life. Fran was employed by Hillcrest Day Care Center, where she cared for many infants and toddlers throughout her tenure until her retirement in 2004.

She loved small dogs and preferred the Chihuahua breed, always having one by her side. She enjoyed reading magazines, working crossword puzzles and watching western movies. John Wayne being her favorite actor, she collected most of his movies.

Fran was preceded in death by her parents; eight siblings; and son, Joe Carlos of Eagle River. She is survived by her oldest daughter, Toni Carlos of Eagle River; oldest son, Dale Carlos (Cindy Carlos) of Eagle River; youngest daughter, Tina Nethery of Anchorage; and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Carlos of Eagle River. She leaves behind 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and only living sibling, Edna Poe of Idaho.

She will be cremated in her Temple Garments and her ashes will be laid to rest in Rock Springs, Wyo., with her parents and siblings.

A family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to The Chugiak Senior Center Assisted Living Program, Alzheimer's Resource of Alaska, Valley Hospice Resources or Friends of Pets.
