Donald Griffith

May 28, 1948 -

Dec 21, 2021

On Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021, Donald Paige Griffith Sr. passed away with his wife of 52 years, Katherine Allen Griffith, by his side.

Donald was born on May 28, 1948, in Danville, Va., to Jessie and Lois (Worsham) Griffith. He graduated from George Washington High School in Danville and joined the Air Force in 1967. He then went to Vietnam, where he served with distinction, being twice awarded for valor, receiving Silver and Bronze Stars as well as a Purple Heart. His time in the Air Force took him all over the world, including Alaska three times, where all four of his children were born. After serving in the military, Donald continued his education, receiving a Ph.D. in both theology and psychology. He then served his fellow man as both an ordained Southern Baptist minister and a psychologist, working at non-profits like Covenant House and the Alaska Mental Health Consumer Web, as well as for the Anchorage School District at Bartlett High School. Donald also gave his time as a counselor at many youth camps over the years, positively impacting so many more lives than just those of his own children, being considered like a second father to many. He retired in 2012, due to health concerns and to spend more time with his family.

Donald was a great athlete who excelled in baseball, basketball, golf and bowling. He enjoyed Alaska's wilderness as well by hiking and hunting. In his remaining days he loved spending time with his family, telling stories, playing games and watching his grandchildren grow. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; children, Donald, William, Katrina and Dennis; grandchildren, Sierra, Jill, Jordan, Zachary, Kiernan, James, Owen and Axel. He is also survived by two of his sisters, Elaine and Rebecca. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Gene, Billy and Larry; as well as his sisters, Patsy and Margie.
