Longtime Alaska resident Robert "Bert" Salzman passed away on Oct. 25, 2021, at age 88, at home in Anchorage, Alaska. Bert was born in Palouse, Wash., on Oct. 8, 1933.
He graduated from Moses Lake High School in 1951. Served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955. Was married to Goldia Girnus from 1957 to 1985, and then to Alice Cartwright from 1986 until his death. He came to Alaska in 1959 to work for the FAA. During his time in the FAA he lived all over Alaska before retiring in 1988.
His family wrote: "Bert loved his family; he enjoyed sharing his love of flying and hunting with family and friends. As grandkids came along, he would find new passions to share, like golf and shooting. Although he could have a gruff exterior at times, he was soft at heart and would lend a hand to anybody. He loved to tell stories of his adventures, especially when it involved his family and friends, much to their embarrassment. He will be sorely missed by all, especially by his wife Alice who will miss saying their nightly prayers together."
Bert is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alice Salzman; children, Rob Salzman (Diane), Roxi Gelb (Allen) and Todd Salzman (Julie); stepson, Raymond Ashcraft (Tricia); 16 grandchildren, four of whom are married; one great-grandchild; and sibling, Don Salzman (Candy).
He was preceded in death by sons, Ronnie and Randy Salzman; parents, Ed and Lena Salzman; and siblings, George Salzman and Marty Brady.
The family asks that any donations be made to either The Last Frontier Honor Flight, P.O. Box 875021, Wasilla, AK 99687; or Covenant House, 755 A Street, Anchorage, AK 99501, in lieu of flowers.
