John James Flournoy III

Sep 12, 2021

John J. Flournoy III of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away on Sept. 12, 2021.

An avid hiker, he was at a favorite site on Cook Inlet when an accident took him home. He had gone to see the sun rise.

John was an alumnus of The Woodrow Wilson School of International Affairs at Princeton University. An Army Military Intelligence Officer, he served in South Korea, Germany and at the now closed Fort Devens, Mass. He worked in the finance industry after receiving his MBA from Columbia University.

He delighted in his golf clubs, always preferring to carry them that he might drink in all the landscape had to offer. He viewed companionship on the course the same way, prizing both his friendships as well as the chance encounters the game would bring.

John's faith was very important to him and is a comfort to those he left behind. He loved the Lord, his family, friends and Alaska. He seemed to find people he knew no matter where he traveled in the world, as he deeply enjoyed engaging with others. His deep, vast intelligence may only have been exceeded by his encyclopedic memory.

John is survived by his spouse, Lisa; and his daughters, Rebecca Barlow and Caroline Flournoy.
