Fred Leslie Byers, 94, died at home on May 28, 2021, in Anchorage, Alaska.

He was born on June 14, 1926, in Oakland, Calif., to Charles Byers and Irene (Clinton) Byers. Fred married Edith (Jean) Byers during his military service, in 1947, at Fort Richardson, Alaska. After a trip back to California, Fred and Jean drove the Alcan with two infants and settled as permanent residents of Alaska in 1949. They lived in Anchorage and Indian over the past 70 years. Fred was active in Christian ministry during his attendance at Lake Spenard Baptist; Sand Lake Baptist; Grace Brethern; Indian Valley Chalet; and was currently attending Baxter Road Bible Church. Fred participated as a deacon and as a leader, and he enjoyed singing in the choir in his church associations. He was active as a supporter of missionaries through the churches and personally as well. Fred served in the U.S. Army and was employed by Alaska Airlines in Anchorage for 43 years. He loved the Alaska outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and berry picking, and was an avid small plane pilot. During his retirement, Fred enjoyed many hobbies and was a regular blue-ribbon winner in his various woodworking activities. He was a member of the YMCA, Alaska Creative Scrollers/Woodworkers groups. Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Edith (Jean) Byers; parents, Charles and Irene Byers; stepmom, Jean Byers; daughter-in-law, Judy Byers; son-in-law, Dan Sager; grandson, Jacob Sager; and granddaughter, Rayanne Severson. Survivors include sister, Barbara Flint; brother, Ken Byers, children; Nellie (Jeff) Anthony, Nancy Gushee, Ernie Byers, Becky (Wes) Severson, Phillip Byers, Tim (Cathy) Byers, Alice (George) Marvin and Lorna (Tracy) VanHee; 26 grandchildren; and 55 great- and great-great-grandchildren.
