Feb 11, 2021
Longtime Palmer, Alaska, resident Floyd Ray Ehmann, 90, passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2021, at his home on the Springer System.
There will be no services, as was his wish. His ashes will be buried later this year at Elizabeth Cemetery in Elizabeth, Colo.
Dad was born on Sept. 22, 1930, in Deer Trail, Colo., and was raised on a farm there. At the age of 17 he "talked" his way into the United States Navy from 1948-52, where he served as a Naval Airman on the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. WASP.
Once out of the Navy, Dad met Josephine Maez and they were married in Golden, Colo., in 1952. He worked as a delivery driver for Coors Brewing Company from 1953-60, and as a concrete batch plant Superintendent from 1960-61, in Golden.
After seeing a film of Alaska, his cousin Bud Bishop had made Dad say "We're moving to Alaska." In early 1961, they packed up their three kids and Dad's 17-year-old cousin, Johnny Ehmann, and made the 17 day "adventure" over the Alcan to Alaska. Dad lived and worked in Alaska most of his life. He worked for various Alaska construction companies from 1961-65; Hermon Brothers Construction, Palmer from 1965-79; and started his own construction company, E & E Construction from 1980-92, in Palmer until "retirement" in 1992. After retiring he moved to Hotchkiss, Colo., to "get back to his roots" and became a rancher. Dad later moved back to Alaska and spent time commercial fishing until building and moving into his new home on the Springer System.
Dad's favorite things to do in his "spare time" were, hunting, fishing, flying, playing cards, commercial fishing and ranching.
Dad lived and worked in Alaska most of his adult life and was proud to be considered an Alaskan. He was also proud of the hundreds of construction projects, large and small, he completed across Alaska.
He is survived by brother, Karl Ehmann and wife, Jean; son, Floyd (Butch) Ehmann and wife, Sharon Ehmann; grandchildren, Jim, Butch and Jamie; daughter, Judy Ann Hermon and family; grandchildren, Leslie, Sam and Stephanie; daughter, Cheryl Lynn Deland and husband, Ben Deland; grandchildren, Tom, Tim and Tiffany; son, Joey Ray Ehmann and wife, Linda Ehmann; grandchildren, Mark and Karl; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Floyd Ehmann was preceded in death by his father, Karl Ehmann; mother, Ula Pearl Rector; sister, Pearl Lakey; and daughter, Judy Ann Hermon.
The family asks that donations be made to Disabled Veterans of America, in lieu of flowers.
