Claudette Ellen Engblom-Bradley

Claudette Ellen Engblom-Bradley, Ed.D, passed away on Jan. 13, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. She was born on April 11, 1942, to Claude and Helen Grinage of Stratford, Conn.

She is survived by her brothers, Ronald Grinage of Ovido, Fla., and Kent Grinage of Vancouver, Wash.; her husband, Michael Engblom-Bradley of Billings, Mont.; and her two sons, Jonathon Bradley of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kevin Bradley of Billings.

A member of the Schaghticoke Tribe in Kent, Conn., Claudette received undergraduate and master's degrees in mathematics from the University of Connecticut and an education doctorate from Harvard University School of Education.

Her life revolved around teaching and family. Throughout her academic life, she taught children at the elementary and secondary levels in Guam, Hawaii, and California, and post-secondary education and graduate-level courses at the University of Alaska for many years. Before retiring in 2012, she was on the teaching staff at Alaska Pacific University.

Throughout her life, she was passionately dedicated to teaching, especially first nation indigenous students. As a member of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, she organized summer camps for multicultural and indigenous students in Alaska and the Southwestern United States. Dr. Bradley was also an active member of the North American Study Group for Ethno-mathematics. Her academic research was far-reaching and included the study of navigation by Native American tribes.
