Cherri Geraldine Womac of Chugiak, Alaska, passed away on Dec. 27, 2020. Cherri was born on June 17, 1952, in Tooele, Utah, to JC and Sharon Womac. They were an Air Force family and moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1953, soon moving to Chugiak where they built a house out of an old military barrack, and where Cherri later lived with her four children.
Cherri attended Chugiak High School and graduated in 1970. She was proud to have been a Majorette, and could still be convinced to show off her baton twirling skills many years after. She married Darrell Johnston in 1973. They had four children, Ty, Bria, Trace and Dwyn, and lived in Palmer Butte, Alaska. When they divorced in 1986, Cherri moved back to Chugiak with all four kids. She then attended Charter College, graduating with a bachelor's degree and quickly got a job working for the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council. Cherri was a tireless State of Alaska employee for 31 years, and was proud of the work they did in educating the public about environmental practices.
Cherri was a very talented seamstress. She sewed and mended many clothes for her children and grandchildren and always had her sewing machine sitting right on the table in her kitchen. She also loved gardening. She could often be found sitting outside just enjoying her flowers and all the living things around her.
Cherri's children and grandchildren were her life. She called them her "treasures," and she truly felt blessed by them. Those who know her might be easily convinced that she spent most of her time thinking about things she could do with her family and things she could do for her family. She always put them first, spending much of her time caring for her grandchildren because she knew how important it was for them to feel loved and supported. Cherri could be found sitting proudly at every concert, sporting event or awards ceremony. At least once a year she took the grandkids to a show at the Performing Arts Center, hoping to instill in them a love of the arts, of which she was a huge supporter. Cherri was also a loyal and dedicated daughter, sister and friend. All who knew her felt lucky just to be around her and feel her gentle kindness.
Cherri is survived by her mother, Sharon (Rasmussen) Womac; sisters, Sandy Johnson and Kathleen Womac; brother, Johnny Womac; children, Ty Johnston, Bria Johnston, Trace Johnston and Dwyn Johnston Metzger; grandchildren, Cadence Johnston, Rowan Metzger, Nycoh Johnston and Avery Johnston.
She is preceded in death by her father, JC Womac; and her infant son, Derek Johnston.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you support the Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward, Alaska, which was dear to Cherri's heart.
