Scott McClain

May 14, 1975 -

Oct 23, 2020

Scott William McClain, loving husband, father, son and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his wife, Jennifer and with his children present, on Oct. 23, 2020 after a courageous battle with an aggressive work-related cancer. He sacrificed his life serving others as a firefighter. This is considered a Line of Duty Death - LODD

Scott was born on May 14, 1975 in Kalispell, Mont. to William and Ruth McClain. He lived in Columbia Falls, Mont. until 1982, when he moved with his parents to Bonnie Lake, Wash. and then on to Chugiak, Alaska in 1986 where he remained until his death.

Scott attended Chugiak Elementary, Gruening Junior High and Chugiak High School, graduating in 1993 from Chugiak High.

From the time Scott was old enough to put on his little plastic red fireman helmet and plastic Scott Air Pack, his dream was to one day be a firefighter. He joined the Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 16 as a Jr Firefighter and served there until being hired on with Anchorage Fire Department in 2001. Scott also worked during his volunteer years for the Division of Forestry, State of Alaska. Scott was medically retired in 2014 from AFD. Scott was passionate about helping his peers and friends with service-related trauma and health and was becoming an integral part of the Soldier's Heart Program. He loved his Soldier's Heart buddies and looked forward to his Zoom meetings with them.

Scott had a heart for giving and sharing his passion of boating, fishing, hunting and fire training and safety. One of his favorite things to do was to take friends and family out on the Knik River in his boat fishing or share his knowledge as an outdoorsman. Scott loved teaching and sharing with children and was a favorite amongst the teachers during Fire Prevention Week at the elementary schools.

He married the love of his life, Jennifer, on May 24, 2018. His years spent with Jennifer was the beginning of his healing and some of the happiest years of his life. They shared many happy moments, fishing, boating, hiking, vacationing in Hawaii, spending time at the family cabin and just spending time together. His parents, Bill and Ruth are eternally grateful for the love Jennifer had for their son. His last year was blessed by the gentle, encouraging spirit of loving his wife Jennifer.

Scott is survived by his wife, Jennifer McClain; his children, Krystina McClain (lan), Mackenzie McClain, and Kaylee McClain; his grandchildren, Brantley, Rhyker, Esmae and Ellouise, Gina Treesh, the mother of his children; his parents, William and Ruth McClain; his sisters, Holly Steiner (Paul) and Alisa Parrent (Corey) and their children; and his childhood best friend and brother, Ben Demboski. He is preceded in death by his cousins, John Meyer, Bobbi Jo Bernau, Jeremy Bernau, Steven Newton; his aunt Rebecca Meyer; uncle, Pat Buls; and his grandparents.

A memorial service is scheduled for Nov. 7, 2020 at the Anchorage Baptist Temple in Anchorage, AK at 2:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Open House from 6:00-8:00 at Tree of Life Church, 268 E Fireweed Ave, Palmer, AK
