It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Robert Churchill Ackles Jr., from complications of heart disease. We take solace in the fact that Robert, or "Bob," by which most knew him, was surrounded at his death by his family and lifelong friends; and that he was doing one of his favorite things shortly before he died - playing golf. He was 68 years old.
Bob was born in Detroit, Mich. He grew up in Akron, Ohio, and studied Accounting at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He hitchhiked to Alaska in the 70s and spent over 40 years in Alaska, which he loved to call home. One of the top golfers in the state of Alaska, Bob was an owner and managing partner of Settlers Bay Golf Course in Wasilla, Alaska. He loved many things - first and foremost - his family.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Kelly Simms (Christopher Simms), Lindsey Peterson (Ryan Peterson) and Allison Ackles; grandchildren, Harrison and Georgina Simms; sister, Joan Saunders (Richard Saunders); brother, James Ackles (Melissa Ackles); stepbrother, Jeff Wells (Anne Wells); stepsister, Lori Schwantz (Randy Schwantz); and their mother, Frances S. Ackles (dec. March 22, 2020); as well as his many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and admiring colleagues, and lifelong friends. His father, Robert Sr.; and mother, Isabelle Boggs Ackles, preceded Bob in death.
Bob's celebration of life and memorial golf tournament will be held at Settlers Bay Golf Course on Aug. 28, 2020 in Wasilla. In lieu of flowers and for further updates, please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/529132467778354 for information about the celebration and about charitable giving.
