Verne Leon Jensen - known to most as Leon - passed away on May 26, 2026, after a courageous battle with mesothelioma.
Born and raised in Tooele, Utah, the youngest of three boys. He married his high school sweetheart Karen (Bonelli) Jensen in 1969, and they raised three children: Eric, Laura and Brian. He worked in Civil Service which brought him from Cheyenne, Wyo., to King Salmon, Alaska, in 1984. He then relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1989. Leon later retired from the FAA in 2005, after 36 years of service.
Leon loved family, fishing and hunting, traveling, cheering for the Denver Broncos and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He treasured every opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments. Leon and Karen also shared a love of travel, often combining their adventures with Broncos games and opportunities to explore history - one of Leon's greatest passions.
He is survived by his loving wife, Karen; children, Laura and Brian; four grand kids; his brother; and many other in-laws and nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. All were an important part of Leon's story and the life he so fully lived.
Leon will be remembered for his laughter, his humor and his unforgettable "Leonisms" which carried lessons about life, responsibility and finding joy even in the difficult moments. His words were often simple, but always memorable and full of insight. Among them were, "How's that work-to-fun ratio going?" and "I never make a mistake when I'm alone." His final Leonism - "Gee, I'm going to miss me when I'm gone" - no truer words could have been spoken. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Life will be held at a later time, with services expected to be held in both Alaska and Utah.
