Rebeca Santiago Pelaez went home to be with Jesus on July 17, 2025. A radiant light in the lives of many, Rebeca's presence was a gift - her compassion, strength and unwavering faith left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Rebeca was born in Miami, Fla., and was raised in Recife, Brazil, and Austin, Texas. She spent the summers throughout her youth in Miami. She graduated with a B.S. in social work from Texas State and received a master's in social work from the University of Texas in San Antonio. She landed her dream job at the U.S. Department for Veterans Affairs (VA) in January 2013, and began her work in suicide prevention. Her job took her to Canadaigua, N.Y.; Richmond, Va.; Waco, Texas; and Anchorage, Alaska. She found her true home in Wasila, Alaska, and loved it there. Her last post was as the Engagement Coordinator for the VA for the State of Alaska, where her tireless commitment touched the lives of countless veterans, coworkers, and community members.
She is buried at Alaska's National Cemetery at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, where she was honored with the Alaska Medal of Freedom from the Director of Alaska's VA.
She was a devoted member of the ACF Church in Eagle River, Alaska, and found deep joy and connection in her women's group, Ladies Table Night. She had a joyful spirit and was delighted by life's simple pleasures, but above all, Rebeca loved her family fiercely. Her young children, Esperanza and Alfred, were the heartbeat of her world.
She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Mack; children, Zachary, Esperanza and Alfred; father, Roberto Pelaez; stepmother, Dr. Gloria Artecona Pelaez; siblings, Roberto III (Bronwen), Barbara (JC) and Salvador (Sarahit); and many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Rebeca's absence leaves a profound ache- but her light continues to shine in the lives she touched and the love she gave so freely.
