Nikander Shane

Nikander Shane Sr., 73, died on Aug. 17, 2023.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at Saint Innocent Orthodox Cathedral, 401 Turpin Street in Anchorage, Alaska. The viewing will be at 10 a.m., with a service to follow. A burial service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.

One of 17 children, Nikander was born on St. George Island, Alaska, on Nov. 17, 1949, to William and Martha Shane (Fratis). He graduated from Mt. Edgecombe High School and attended Haskell Indian Nations University.

Nikander and his sister Kathy were called "Happy Hooligans" by their mother. When his mother tried to scold him, he would dance with her to make her laugh and forget she was trying to scold him. He had the most carefree spirit of his siblings.

Nikander was preceded in death by his parents, William and Martha Shane; sisters, Serafima Shane, Katherine Dunton and Erena Haynes; and brothers, John Shane, Walter Shane and David Shane.

He is survived by his children, Krystal Furio and Nikander Shane Jr.; five grandchildren; brothers, William Shane Jr., Frank Shane, Mike Shane and Benjamin Shane; sisters, Mabel Kochutin, Diane Krukoff, Dorothy Andrews and Anna Lestenkof; and countless nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews. May his memory be eternal.
