Karen "Kandy" Kizis

On Dec. 13, 2021, Karen "Kandy" Ann Kizis died at her home in Chugiak, Alaska, at the age of 67, from natural causes.

Kandy was born in Rochester, N.Y. She graduated from Wheaton Central High School in Wheaton, Ill., in 1972, then attended College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa. Upon graduation in 1976, Kandy was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force, where she served all over the world in her role as a dedicated flight nurse.

After retirement from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Kandy remained active in her community in the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) Anchorage chapter since 1998, including serving as its president from 2006-2008; enjoyed spending time with her dog Mac; and was known to be ball of energy with an outgoing personality.

Kandy is survived by her daughter, Christine Hurt (Lincoln) of Indiana; father, John Kizis of Florida; sisters, Janel Tomalis (Al) of Pennsylvania and Brita Horn (Gary) of Colorado; nieces, Robyn Kozemko (John) of South Carolina, Amanda Harclerode (Troy) with great-nephew Thomas of Pennsylvania, Abigail Horn of Kansas, and Izabel Frei (Jeff) of Nebraska; and nephews, Erik Tomalis (Katie) and Brett Considine (Vanessa) of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joan Messmer; and sister, Daria Considine, both of Pennsylvania; and previous husbands, Alden Todd and Thomas Schuh.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at Holy Spirit Episcopal church in Eagle River, 17545 North Eagle River Loop Road, Eagle River, AK 99577. Details are being worked out for burial in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors applicable to her rank of Lt. Colonel.
