Nov 20, 2022
James "Robby" Robinson, 85, died at Joint Base Elmendorf/Richardson Hospital, in Anchorage, Alaska, on Nov. 20, 2022. He was the first son born on Oct. 19, 1937, to George and Gladys Robinson in Bastrop, La. During the great migration, the Robinson family moved to California, where he was raised in Dos Palos and Berkeley.
In 1959, Robby joined the Air Force. In 1962-1966, and again in 1970 he was assigned to Elmendorf AFB, where he retired as an E-6, in 1975 after 20 years of service.
Timing of Robby's military retirement offered an opportunity to work on the trans-Alaska pipeline, 1975-1977. After leaving the pipeline, Robby worked for the Municipality of Anchorage as a Principal Code Enforcement Officer, 1984-1996, and served two terms as the first African American President of Alaska Municipal Employees Association.
Alaska's growing, diverse population inspired Robby to participate in heritage and ethnic awareness opportunities in Anchorage. In 1996, Robby was elected president of African American Historical Society and collaborated with great men and women of the community to bring the first annual Juneteenth celebration to Anchorage.
Robby became a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge in 2001, served a term as Commander; and was also a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Robby was generous, funny, intense and always ready for a good, fun debate. His aura exuded confidence and self-assurance. We'll miss his big smile and those bright, piercing eyes that made you feel like the most important person in the room.
Robby Robinson is survived by his wife, Vera; children, Tonyua, Sonya, Diannia and Shawn; brothers, Sidney and George; sisters, Patricia and Delores; a whole host of cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as many, many friends.
Robby will be sadly missed and will always hold a place in our hearts. Please join us in honoring his amazing life on Dec. 8, 2022, at 11:30 a.m., at New Hope Compassionate Ministry, 1220 E Street in Anchorage; 907-274-4673.
