Frederick Hahn Harding, 89, of Palmer, Alaska, passed away on Dec. 5, 2020, in Palmer.
Fred was born in Pen Argyl, Pa., to Bernice and Mackey Harding on April 6, 1931, and was their only child. He graduated from Lehigh University with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He married Carolyn Hansch on Oct. 29, 1972, in Portland, Ore. He once served as the mayor of Valdez during the pipeline building days. He worked as a civil engineer for State of Alaska in the Highway Department in Valdez, then Fish & Game in Anchorage. He retired from the State of Alaska after 25 years of service. He was part of the crew that built the Denali Highway and many fish hatcheries around the state. He also retired from Alyeska Pipeline working at Kuparuk. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had served overseas in Tripoli, Libya. He was greatly involved and loved his family and church. Fred was influential in local music from playing in church to being part of a Klezmer band and community bands both in Anchorage and later in the Mat-Su Valley. He also taught private music lessons and volunteered teaching band and orchestra at multiple Mat-Su Valley schools.
Fred is preceded in death by his mother and father.
Fred is survived by wife, Carolyn; daughter, Lisa and son-in-law Howdice; and grandchildren, Howdice III, Joshua and wife Mary, and Noah.
