On June 22, 2026, the Lord called Fred Gomez Jr. home. His life began in Bryan, Texas, on Feb. 1, 1939, to his parents, Fred Gomez Sr. and Dorothy Gomez.

During Fred's early formative years, he lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raphael Gomez, learning their customs and language.

Fred lived a life shaped by service. He answered his country's call as a young man, serving with the United States Marine Corps and later the United States Air Force, including combat tours in Vietnam. The discipline, grit and quiet courage he carried home from those years stayed with him for the rest of his life.

After his military service, Fred made Alaska his home and built a long career with the State of Alaska Department of Corrections, retiring as a correctional officer. It was demanding work, and Fred met it the way he met everything — head-on, with integrity and a steady hand.

Anyone who knew Fred knew his generosity. He was the kind of man who gave of his time generously and selflessly. That open-handed kindness drew people to him and kept them close.

Away from work, Fred lived fully. He loved his horses and the rhythm of caring for them. He loved the open road on a motorcycle even more — wind, miles and the company of his wife, Maren. Together, they spent winters snowbirding in Yuma, Ariz., trading Alaska's cold for desert sun, good friends and travel.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Maren Gomez; seven daughters; one son; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of friends who loved him.

A service with full military honors was held at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery on Aug. 5, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.
