Diana Louise (Halverson) Nentwich, 82, of Chugiak, passed away peacefully on Sept. 26, 2025, at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Diana will be laid to rest at Fort Richardson, and a celebration of her life will be held at the Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center on Oct. 11, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Born on April 26, 1943, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Clarence "Faville" and Margaret Halverson, Diana was lovingly named for Anne Shirley's "bosom friend" Diana Barry in Anne of Green Gables. In 1954, she traveled to Alaska with her parents and five siblings in a converted school bus. Though their journey nearly ended with a breakdown along the way, they pressed on to the Great Land. Diana often recounted this adventure in later years.
Following high school at West Anchorage, she attended beauty school and went on to operate a one-chair salon from her home in Chugiak, where she combined her skills with compassion and personal care. In 1964, she married Edward Nentwich. Together, they may be remembered in the Chugiak–Eagle River community for their work from 1994 to 2007 as a school bus driver and attendant for children with special needs.
Diana found deep meaning and fulfillment in time spent with her family. She loved words—both reading and writing—and was gifted at sewing and cooking, always eager to share her talents with others. She delighted in recalling ditties and jingles and always seemed to have the perfect song for the occasion. Diana's warmth and humor were treasured by her many circles, including her writing group, Bunco group and water aerobics friends.
She is survived by her children, Julie (Joe) Stolzman of Southport, N.C., Carl (Dolly) Nentwich of Chugiak, and Marie (Stephen) Milligan of Washington, D.C.; as well as her grandchildren, Jesse (Gema), Jessica (Dennis), Andrew (Andrea), Gregory and Peter; and five great-grandchildren, Salice, Sofia, Silas, Hudson and Oliver. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, in 2009; son, Steven, in 1966; and son, Gregory, in 1995.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Diana's memory by sharing your time and talents with the residents of the Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center—a place that brought her joy and community.
